An employee laces up their athletic shoes and leaves work at 2 p.m. A manager tells an employee walking in the door at 8:02 a.m. “We start at 8 a.m.” Another employee informs her restaurant manager she doesn’t want to work on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones from a career perspective. Throughout my 36 years in the banking industry, I have been surrounded by an outstanding support system. This support system included a supportive spouse, an inspirational grandmother and three significant male mentors, all from diverse backgrounds. But that is a story for another time!
The latest U.S. Census report shows a growing trend in populations representing diverse cultures, which can potentially lead to a more blended workforce. Organizations are investing in resources and initiatives supporting welcoming and inclusive environments. Competition is tough and all of the successful "big players" across industries are looking for the brightest and best talent.
The California Diversity Council (CADC) will host its 5th Annual Diversity and Leadership Conference on June 10-11 at the Garden Grove Sheraton Hotel. This grand event will feature special recognitions for Most Powerful & Influential Women, Multicultural Leaders and DiverstiyFirsttm Leaders, in the California area, as well as keynote speakers Tony Plana, Cuban-American actor and Donna Brazile, veteran demographic political strategist.
In celebration of Women's History Month in March, the California Diversity Council-Orange County Chapter presented the Women in Leadership Symposium, hosted by Broadcom Corporation at its Headquarters in Irvine, on March 13. The event was a fitting 5th Annual Celebration of Women's History Month, with the theme of "Women in Leadership: Women Empowering Women."
Despite the many evacuations caused by the California wildfires, the San Diego Chapter of the California Diversity Counsil hosted its inagural Veteran's Summit on May 15th at the UPS Store Home Office. Business professionals and veterans came together to explore the theme "Operation Workforce Readiness."
For over twenty years living in the United States, I never had to stop and think about how much I had become “Americanized” until a colleague recently told me when she asked me to write an article about Asian History. I always thought that I am still very traditional and still carry a lot of my culture and beliefs, but when it was time to share some of my thoughts, I went blank.
