As the founder of the National Diversity Council, I would like to welcome you to the first edition of the 2013 California Diversity Council Newsletter. We are very excited about the upcoming year and the events we have planned for our community.
One of the first conversations I had with one of my favorite clients in the new year began with her expressing a vague ennui with her current job, colleagues, and projects as 2013 began in earnest. Having known her now for over ten years, I probed deeper about her yearning, and as she started talking about her true heart's desire, her voice softened and even I was conjuring images of what she was being drawn to in her wildest dreams.
To maximize the impact of diverse talent, companies must learn how to retain it. Here are some steps to consider. A 2011 study, "Women Matter 2," by McKinsey and Co., found that companies with an above average proportion of women on their management committees delivered better performance than those with a below average proportion of women. I have several hundred ideas a month on what we might do. Soy latte please!

The Chinese New Year is the most important social, cultural and economic holiday in China. The date of the holiday is determined by the lunar-solar Chinese calendar. This year, the New Year will be celebrated on February 10, 2013. Although the Gregorian calendar along with the Jesuit missionaries arrived in China in 1582, it wasn’t until 1912 that the general population began using it. However, Mao Zedong forbade the celebration of the traditional Chinese New year and celebrated the West’s New Year on January 1.
